Grand Erie Public Health has issued a Cold Weather Notification for Brantford-Brant and Haldimand-Norfolk, with the advisory taking effect on December 4th, as temperatures across the region are expected to drop sharply.
The Medical Officer of Health says the notification is triggered when temperatures fall below –15°C or when wind chill values reach –20°C, conditions that can elevate the risk of frostbite, hypothermia, and other cold-related health issues.
The alert will remain in place until the health unit issues a cancellation, and officials warn that people who spend long periods outdoors — or who lack proper clothing, shelter, or heating — face the greatest danger.
Public health staff are urging residents to limit time outside, dress in warm layers, and cover exposed skin with hats, scarves, mittens, and face protection to reduce the risk of injury.
Waterproof boots, extra socks, and regular breaks indoors are also recommended, along with drinking warm, caffeine-free and alcohol-free fluids to avoid dehydration.
Officials are also asking residents to check in on older adults and vulnerable neighbours to ensure they are safe, warm, and adequately sheltered as temperatures fall.
Drivers are reminded to keep an emergency kit in their vehicles during winter travel.
