A quick-thinking OPP officer and a fast response from local firefighters helped prevent major damage during an attic fire in Port Dover on November 30, 2025.
Around 2:50 p.m., the Norfolk County Fire Department was called to a structure fire on Main Street. Two stations and about 20 firefighters responded. The fire was first spotted by an OPP officer, who immediately ran to the home, alerted the occupants, and ensured everyone got out safely. The residents were inside and unaware of the danger.
When crews arrived, they found an active fire in the attic. Firefighters launched an aggressive interior attack and brought the flames under control within minutes. Their quick action stopped the fire from spreading into the second storey and reduced overall damage.
No injuries were reported. Damage is estimated at $50,000, and the home is insured. The cause is still under investigation.
“This incident is a reminder of why every home needs working smoke alarms on every level,” said Deputy Fire Chief James Robertson. “They provide the early warning that gives you and your family precious seconds to escape.”
