The Norfolk General Hospital Foundation is inviting residents across Norfolk County to take part in Giving Tuesday, a global movement encouraging people to give back after the spending of Black Friday and Cyber Monday. The charitable day, held each year on the first Tuesday after American Thanksgiving, focuses on supporting organizations that inspire community members.
Interim Foundation Executive Director Sarah Muntz-Flowerday says they have participated for several years, but last year marked a major breakthrough thanks to the Heart of Healthcare apparel from The Folk, who donate a portion of those sales back to the Foundation.
The campaign “exploded” on social media, and staff hope even more people will join in this year.
While Giving Tuesday can include donations, the Foundation says the day is largely about raising awareness. As many people still do not realize that the government does not fund new or replacement hospital equipment.
Muntz-Flowerday added the government funding only covers staffing and basic operations.
This year’s Giving Tuesday also includes the return of Grinch Gives, a partnership with McDonald’s on Queensway. Last year, the restaurant sold 532 Grinch-themed meals, each including a pair of special socks.
Tomorrow, whether through selfies, donations, or a festive meal, the Foundation says every act helps strengthen healthcare close to home.
