Nice Work If You Can Get It - rehearsal
Simcoe Little Theatre (SLT) is swinging into the Roaring Twenties with its new musical comedy “Nice Work If You Can Get It”, directed by Janet Dickson with assistant director and stage manager Joanne Pond — the same dynamic team behind SLT’s sold-out production of White Christmas in 2023. Opening November 20, the show promises flappers, bootleggers, romance, and plenty of laughs.
Featuring the timeless music of George and Ira Gershwin, this jukebox-style musical blends familiar tunes such as Let’s Call the Whole Thing Off and ’S Wonderful — along with a few other classics audiences are sure to recognize.
Dickson and Pond explained that the story follows a wealthy bachelor who unexpectedly falls in love with a feisty bootlegger during the height of Prohibition.
The production features an 18-member cast of local talent performing to recorded orchestral tracks, creating a full jazzy sound without overpowering the singers. Pond said they were amazed by the talent that came out to audition back in June and praised the cast’s dedication throughout rehearsals.
Dickson describes the show as “a comedy, a romance, and a celebration of great music,” adding that it’s also an award winner, having enjoyed a successful Broadway run not too long ago.
Performances of “Nice Work If You Can Get It” run November 20 to December 7, with evening shows and weekend matinees. Tickets are available through the Simcoe Little Theatre and Lighthouse Festival websites. Pond adds with a smile, “It’s not a Christmas musical — but it’s a great Christmas gift.”
