This past Friday marked the final week of regular play for local high school football.
The Cayuga Warriors rolled into Simcoe to take on the Holy Trinity Titans, with both teams looking to add to their single-win records. Seasons with few wins are always tough on morale, but both sides came out fired up and ready to play. Each team did a solid job of containing the other, keeping the game scoreless into the fourth quarter.
With less than a minute on the clock, Titans quarterback Logan Mark (#8) hit a deep post route that took Holy Trinity into the red zone. Mark then punched it into the Warriors’ end zone with 40 seconds remaining. The Warriors answered with a strong kick return and drive — until Russell Godly (#52) came up with a clutch interception for the Titans, showing great awareness to kneel inbounds and let his team run out the clock for a 6–0 victory. The Titans snagged their second win of the season.
Elsewhere in the league, the winless Simcoe Composite Sabres travelled up Old Highway 24 to Waterford to face the Wolves. Unfortunately for Simcoe, the Wolf Pack held strong at home, winning 34–12.
Down in Langton, the Valley Heights Bears hosted the Pauline Johnson Thunderbirds from Brantford. The Thunderbirds’ offence continued its impressive season, defeating the Bears 29–1.
Meanwhile, the second-place McKinnon Park Blue Devils were in Delhi to face the undefeated Raiders in what could be a preview of the championship game. It was a defensive slugfest that ended 0–0 in regulation, sending the game into overtime. The Raiders pulled out the win, 6–0, to stay unbeaten.
We’re set for playoff action this Friday! Pauline Johnson heads to Caledonia to face McKinnon Park, while the Waterford Wolves travel to Delhi for a Pumpkin Bowl rematch against the undefeated Raiders.
