Premier Doug Ford’s government is facing criticism for moving to limit debate and public input on three major pieces of legislation, including one that would end the province’s speed camera program.
Government House Leader Steve Clark introduced a motion to fast-track the bills, which also include labour and emergency management reforms, bypassing the committee stage typically reserved for public consultation and amendments.
Premier Ford has repeatedly dismissed speed cameras as a “cash grab,” despite studies and local data showing they reduce speeding and save lives.
Police chiefs, parents, and researchers from the Hospital for Sick Children have urged the province to maintain the program, citing strong safety evidence.
However, Ford maintains that measures like speed bumps, roundabouts, and flashing signs are more effective deterrents.
