An American man has been sentenced to four years in prison for his role in a major data breach that impacted school systems across Canada.
Matthew D. Lane pleaded guilty in Massachusetts to cyber extortion connected to PowerSchool, a student information platform used nationwide.
Court documents say Lane demanded nearly $3 million in bitcoin to prevent stolen student and teacher data from being released.
PowerSchool says it has strengthened its security and continues to support school partners as Canada’s privacy commissioner closes his investigation.
