The North Shore Highlanders are opening their doors to new members this fall, inviting anyone interested in learning the bagpipes or drums to come out to their free open house on Tuesday, October 21 at 6:30 p.m. at the Port Dover Legion.
Band members Aubrey Scholler and Amber McKnight say the event is open to everyone — from beginners who’ve never picked up an instrument to those with experience looking to join a band. McKnight says the goal, is to make traditional Scottish music accessible and fun for all ages.
While the group focuses on youth aged 10 to 25, anyone is welcome to join — even seniors looking to try something new. Weekly practices take place every Tuesday night at the Legion, and the band performs at around a dozen local events each year, including parades and festivals across Norfolk County.
Scholler, remembers being 11 and how it all started for herself.
She added that although the bagpipes are said to be the second hardest instrument in the world to learn, behind the violin, it shouldn’t intimidate anyone — the Highlanders are excellent teachers. “You get to travel, meet new people, and it’s just a really fun thing to do,” she said.
McKnight explained that many have misconceptions about who can play.
Both said it’s a great way to get involved in the community, have some fun and meet new people.
The Highlanders will perform at the Norfolk County Fair, Pumpkin Fest, and upcoming Santa Claus Parades around Norfolk.
Those interested in joining or learning more can attend the open house or visit the North Shore Highlanders at an upcoming community event.
