It’s Wilkinsons, Your Independent Grocer’s Seeds of Success, fueled by Townsend Butchers.
This week we are looking at beef producers, brought to you by Robinson Chevrolet Buick GMC.
Townsend Butchers has been a staple of the Norfolk County meat industry for over 50 years, and its focus on local beef and community connections continues to set it apart.
Founded in the early 70’s by Steve Miedema’s father and uncle, the business originally specialized in custom processing for local farmers, handling beef, pork, lamb, and other red meats.
Today, Townsend Butchers continues that tradition while expanding into retail, maintaining a strong connection with local producers. Steve Miedema, now president of the family-run business, explains that most of their meat comes from nearby farms, including beef from Jarvis, pork from Langton, and lamb from the Vanessa area.
On an average week, Townsend Butchers processes approximately 20 to 25 beef animals, 35 pigs, and a smaller number of specialty meats like lamb, goat, and even the occasional water buffalo or alpaca.
Despite the growth in retail and prepared food offerings, Miedema emphasizes that custom processing and relationships with local farmers remain at the core of the business.
Community engagement is also a major part of Townsend Butchers’ mission.
The business regularly partners with local organizations and schools to provide support for fundraisers and initiatives.
In addition to fresh meat, Townsend Butchers has expanded into prepared foods, offering convenient options such as lasagna, shepherd’s pie, chili, soups, and cabbage rolls in smaller packaging.
Miedema says this shift responds to changing customer needs, including smaller family sizes and evolving food budgets.
