Terry's Team Member Patricia Porter shares her journey.
The Norfolk Terry Fox Run drew an enthusiastic crowd in Simcoe yesterday (Sep14), proudly marking the 45th anniversary of Terry Fox’s Marathon of Hope. Run Committee member Maddy Thorpe welcomed participants and spoke about the importance of fundraising and the lifesaving cancer research supported by the event.
Members of Terry’s Team, individuals who have faced cancer themselves, were celebrated for their courage and perseverance. Patricia Porter shared her emotional journey through multiple chemotherapy treatments, hair loss, surgery, and radiation. She described the physical and mental toll, but also the overwhelming relief of being declared cancer-free. Porter said the experience gave her a brighter outlook on life and deep gratitude for her network of support.
Studio 519 Dance Academy led warm-up stretches before singer Katie Gorzo inspired the crowd with a heartfelt O’Canada. Participants then set off on 1km, 5km, and 10km routes. Lots of smiles, handshakes, and hugs captured Norfolk’s unity and hope. Terry Fox began a marathon against cancer—together, we can “Finish It.”
