Norfolk County Council received an update on the Norfolk-Haldimand Community Hospice on Tuesday.
The hospice has been top of mind for many in the community following the Live Like Luke Cross Country fundraiser.
CEO Andrea Binkle gave a deputation to council saying they hope to have a shovel in the ground by June of next year.
After that, it is up to the construction crew.
She also showed photos of what they hope the hospice will look like.
Binkle wanted it to have an “at home” look with a big porch for decorating.
She also gave them a sneak peak of what they could expect walking through the front door.
The hospice has been approved to operate four beds when it opens, but they are building for ten.
She said they wanted to be prepared for the future and not have to go out again and ask for more funding.
Binkle did make an ask of council at the end of the deputation.
She requested our elected officials consider making a commitment of putting down five percent of the project over three years.
With a price tag of over $14 million, that would put Norfolk on the hook for roughly $700,000.
It was noted that a request for funding cannot be made during a deputation, but staff would speak with her about the next steps.
The request will likely come forward at a later council meet or during budget talks.
