Premier Doug Ford is pushing municipalities to scrap automated speed cameras, calling them a cash grab that does little to improve road safety.
The comments come after Toronto reported more than 800 incidents of vandalism against its 17 speed cameras this year, which generated over $45 million in fines in 2025 alone.
Ford said better signage, flashing lights, and increased awareness around school zones are more effective at slowing drivers than ticketing them after the fact.
Ford suggested that if municipalities don’t remove the cameras voluntarily, the province may step in to ban them altogether.
