Norfolk County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are reminding residents to stay vigilant after a local resident was defrauded by an online job scam on September 1, 2025.
Police say the victim responded to a fraudulent employment advertisement that promised easy money through online work. During the process, the suspects convinced the victim to download an application that appeared to facilitate cryptocurrency payments.
Instead, the victim was asked to transfer money from their own account and eventually provided personal and financial details.
The victim later realized they had been deceived after losing access to funds they had previously sent.
Norfolk OPP and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre are urging community members to be cautious of unsolicited job offers, requests for upfront payments, and instructions to download unfamiliar apps.
