Haldimand-Norfolk MPP Bobbi Ann Brady is raising concerns about literacy rates in Ontario, stressing the urgent need for action. According to Frontier College, 15 per cent of Ontarians aged 16 to 65 struggle with basic reading, while nearly 42 per cent of Canadians require help with reading and writing.
Brady noted literacy is tied to quality of life, pointing out that 46 per cent of adults with the lowest literacy levels live in low-income households, compared to just eight per cent with strong literacy skills. Poor literacy also connects to health and crime rates, with Correctional Services Canada reporting that 75 per cent of offenders have less than a Grade 12 education.
Highlighting examples like former NHL coach Jacques Demers, who spoke openly about his struggles, Brady said reducing stigma and supporting learning centres are key steps. She urged Queen’s Park to prioritize literacy and invest in community programs.
