The Norfolk County Fire Department is looking for new volunteer firefighters to join their ranks.
Fire Prevention Officer Cory Armstrong-Smith says this year’s recruitment drive is significant, with many stations in need.
Those stations are in Port Dover, Waterford, Teeterville, Courtland, Fairground, Port Rowan, Langton, St. Williams, and Vittoria.
You must live in the town to be a volunteer firefighter at that station.
Armstrong-Smith adds that firefighting is a role for people of all shapes, sizes, and skill sets — and they’re looking for a wide range of abilities.
No prior experience is needed, and all training and certification are provided free of charge.
While they’re called “volunteer” firefighters, Armstrong-Smith clarifies that members are paid for their work.
An open house was held Tuesday in Port Dover, and another is taking place tonight (Thursday, August 14) in Port Rowan.
Armstrong-Smith says these events are open to everyone interested in the recruitment process, regardless of which station is hosting.
Flexibility is key, if you are interested.
The nature of the job sees calls come in any time, day or night.
The deadline to apply is Friday, August 29, with testing scheduled for Saturday, September 20.
The test is mandatory.
The training program starts with operational activities in the first three months, followed by intensive weekend training and weekly sessions once the basics are mastered.
Topics include emergency patient care, emergency driving, fire chemistry, ground ladder operations, and structural search and rescue.
