The annual Farm Football Tournament returns to Simcoe on Sunday, August 10, at the Norfolk County Youth Soccer Park (660 West Street). Organized by the Grand River Community Health Centre and partners, the tournament brings together 10 farm teams for a full day of competitive soccer, cultural celebration, and community support.
Launched in 2018 by Carrie Sienkowski and the Farms of Norfolk Football Association, the tournament was created to provide international agricultural workers with a day of recreation, connection, and fun. After a two-year pause during the pandemic, the event has returned stronger than ever.
Lynda Kohler of the Grand River Community Health Centre joined the organization shortly after the tournament began and has seen it evolve.
While it’s a recreational tournament, organizer Carly Watson said the teams take it seriously. The players work hard to prepare—this isn’t just a pickup game; they come to play
This year also introduces a new soccer skills competition and, for the first time, a championship trophy—donated by the Rotary Club of Norfolk Sunrise—that will feature the winning team’s name.
Grand River CHC leads the International Agricultural Worker Program across Brant, Haldimand, and Norfolk counties, working with other health teams to support the physical and mental health of workers. Many international workers face mental health challenges and anxiety. Watson explains that the tournament helps ease these issues and promotes overall well-being
Beyond soccer, the day includes multicultural entertainment, food trucks, a clown, face painting, and family-friendly arts and crafts. The event is free and open to the public.
Everyone is welcome to attend, cheer on the teams, and enjoy a day of celebration and community spirit.
