With summer vacation in full swing and many residents travelling to regions where ride-share services are more widely available, Ontario Provincial Police are reminding the public to keep safety top of mind when using these platforms.
While platforms like Uber and Lyft offer convenience and flexibility, police say it’s important for users to take simple precautions to stay safe during their trips.
Among the OPP’s top recommendations:
- Verify the driver and vehicle: Check that the driver’s name, photo, and vehicle details (make, model, license plate) match what’s listed in the app. Always wait for the driver to confirm your name before getting in, especially in crowded areas.
- Share your ride: Use the app’s feature to share trip details with a friend or family member.
- Choose the back seat: Sitting in the back offers more personal space and easier exits if needed.
- Limit personal info: Avoid oversharing details like your home address or travel plans with the driver.
- Stay aware: Keep your phone out of sight and pay attention to landmarks and surroundings during your ride.
- Use in-app safety features: Many apps offer emergency buttons and real-time ride sharing for added peace of mind.
- Rate your driver: After your trip, provide feedback to help keep the platform safe for everyone.
- Stick to trusted services: Use reputable companies with good safety records and verified drivers.
Police say these tips can go a long way in helping riders stay safe while using ride-share services this summer.
