Blind Golf Canada is hosting a trio of major tournaments this August at The Greens at Renton, just outside Simcoe. The action begins August 1–2 with the Ontario Blind Golf Provincials, followed by the ISPS Handa Canadian Blind Golf Championship from August 3–5, and concludes with the IBGA World Blind Golf Championship from August 6–8.
Over 150 golfers and their guides will take part across the three events, including 33 golfers in the Provincials, 67 in the Canadians, and 56 representing 15 countries in the Worlds. Competitors are classified into B1, B2, and B3 categories depending on their level of vision.
Despite their disability, blind golfers play under the same rules as sighted players, with only a few modifications. Hugh Montgomery, Blind Golf Canada organizer and competitor explains.
Each golfer is paired with a guide who becomes the golfer’s eyes, describing shots and hazards.
Montgomery explains that guides aren’t just caddies—they’re partners.
He emphasized that while blind golf at this level is highly competitive—with players aiming to perform their best and awards given in each category—it is also deeply social and empowering.
The Greens at Renton has become a national hub for Blind Golf since hosting the Provincials and Canadians in 2022. Support from the course and its staff has helped Blind Golf Canada grow.
Volunteers and sponsors are always appreciated. “It takes a lot to put this on,” Montgomery said. “If anyone wants to help, we’d love to hear from you.”
