The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), in partnership with the Ministry of Transportation (MTO) and other road safety organizations, will be placing a strong focus on commercial vehicle safety during Operation Safe Driver Week, taking place this week across the province until Saturday.
Led by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA), this annual campaign aims to reduce collisions and improve driver behaviour through targeted enforcement and education. OPP officers will be monitoring both commercial and passenger vehicle drivers, with particular attention on how they interact and share the road.
Traffic violations such as unsafe lane changes, following too closely, speeding, and other forms of aggressive or careless driving will be key focus areas during the initiative.
Commercial drivers are also reminded that maintaining 24/7 compliance with safety standards—including vehicle inspections, hours of service, properly secured cargo, and the handling of dangerous goods—is essential to road safety and will be part of enforcement checks.
Operation Safe Driver Week highlights the shared responsibility of all road users in keeping Ontario’s roads safe. Whether behind the wheel of a transport truck or a passenger vehicle, safe and respectful driving saves lives.
