Ontario Premier Doug Ford and Alberta Premier Danielle Smith have signed two major agreements aimed at boosting interprovincial trade, energy development, and infrastructure investment.
The premiers announced a joint feasibility study for new pipeline and rail links connecting Alberta’s oil, gas, and minerals to Ontario’s James Bay region and southern hubs. The study will also explore expansions to existing infrastructure and propose options for public-private partnerships, with a focus on using Ontario-made steel and Canadian supply chains.
Both provinces pledged to support each other’s industries—Ontario will allow more Alberta-made alcohol on shelves, and Alberta will buy more Canadian-made vehicles to support Ontario’s auto sector.
Together, the premiers are calling on the federal government to roll back energy regulations like emissions caps and the West Coast tanker ban.
Alberta NDP Leader Naheed Nenshi welcomed trade efforts but criticized the lack of action on real barriers like building codes and labour standards.
