Canada’s ninth National Injury Prevention Day (NIPD) takes place today (July 7). Led by Parachute and officially recognized by Health Canada, this annual event raises awareness about the importance of preventing serious injuries through education, advocacy, and community involvement.
This year’s theme is “Light up green,” encouraging individuals, organizations, and landmarks across Canada to shine green lights in support of injury prevention.
Injury remains the leading cause of death for Canadians aged 1 to 44 and costs the national economy more than $29 billion every year. Most injuries—caused by falls, motor vehicle collisions, and poisonings—are both predictable and preventable.
Every day, 48 Canadians die and another 634 are hospitalized due to injuries. Preventable injury kills more Canadian children than any disease and more youth than all other causes combined.
In 2024, NIPD reached over 13.6 million people through media and social media, with more than 425 organizations participating. The goal: a safer, injury-free Canada.
