Grand Erie Public Health has issued an Extended Heat Warning for the region, as temperatures climb and humid conditions intensify.
An Extended Heat Warning is announced when daytime temperatures are expected to reach at least 31 degrees Celsius and nighttime temperatures remain above 20 degrees Celsius for three or more days, or when the humidex is anticipated to reach 40 for three or more days.
According to Grand Erie Public Health, such conditions can affect everyone, but certain groups are more vulnerable, including older adults, infants, young children, people with chronic illnesses, those working outdoors, and people living without access to air conditioning.
Symptoms of heat‑related illnesses range from dizziness, fainting, and headaches to more serious signs like confusion, a rapid heartbeat, or unconsciousness.
If someone is experiencing signs of heat stroke or other serious heat‑induced illnesses, call 911 immediately.
While waiting for help, move the person to a shaded area, apply cold compresses, and encourage water intake if the person is conscious.
Grand Erie Public Health reminds residents to stay safe by drinking plenty of water, limiting time in direct sun, wearing light and breathable clothing, and checking in on neighbours, friends, and relatives — especially those who may be more vulnerable.
