With summer break approaching, the Norfolk County OPP is urging everyone to focus on bicycle safety. Constable Andrew Gamble is reminding local families that warm weather means more kids outside on their bikes — and safety starts with something as simple as wearing a helmet.
Gamble says helmets provide vital protection in case of falls or collisions. He stresses that parents and guardians must ensure children wear an approved helmet whenever they’re out riding, whether it’s in the driveway, on local roads, or on popular trails like the Lynn Valley Trail.
In addition to cyclists following safety rules, Gamble encourages drivers to do their part. Motorists should stay alert, especially near cycling routes and multi-use trails, and always give cyclists at least one metre of space when passing — as required by law.
Norfolk County offers many beautiful places for cycling, but it takes shared responsibility to keep everyone safe. Gamble hopes both cyclists and drivers will work together to help prevent accidents.

By following simple safety steps, Norfolk County residents can enjoy a fun and injury-free cycling season. Gamble adds that wearing a helmet and staying aware of surroundings are easy ways to help ensure a safe summer for everyone.
