As cottage and beach season begins, OPP are reminding everyone to make water safety a top priority.
In a recent safety talk, Acting Staff Sergeant Steve Smith and Sergeant Ed Sanchuk shared some important tips after a close call over the May long weekend.
OPP’s Marine Unit had to rescue two people who drifted nearly a mile from shore. Neither person could swim, and neither was wearing a life jacket.
Sergeant Smith noted the importance of wearing a lifejacket.
The officers also warned against using alcohol or drugs before heading out on the water as impaired charges don’t just apply to cars or boats.
Sanchuk added that the goal is to prevent tragedies before they happen.
The OPP encourages everyone to plan ahead, use good judgment, and help make this summer safe and enjoyable for all. Whether you’re renting a cottage or spending a day at the lake, water safety should always come first.
