A new era in education has officially begun in Norfolk County as Elgin Avenue Public School and West Lynn Public School come together under a shared identity. The newly named West Elgin Public School is the result of months of community consultation and planning, and will serve as the name of the newly renovated and expanded school building on the former Elgin Avenue Public School site.
The Grand Erie District School Board Trustees approved the name change at a Special Board Meeting on June 9, 2025, marking a significant milestone for the evolving educational landscape in the region.
“Through the support from the Ministry, West Elgin Public School will be revitalized to build a culture of learning, well-being and belonging for students and staff,” said Susan Gibson, Chair of the Board.
The new name is more than just a label—it’s a symbol of unity, inclusion, and community pride. The Board engaged in a public naming process from March 26 to May 24, encouraging students, families, staff, and community members to submit name ideas and their rationales. These submissions were then reviewed by a naming committee and ultimately led to the Board’s final decision.
“West Elgin reflects a renewed sense of belonging and inclusion,” said JoAnna Roberto, Director of Education. “It is a symbol of coming together, of honouring our past while building a future where every student feels seen, supported, and inspired.”
The renovation and expansion project is being supported by provincial funding and will significantly enhance the learning environment. More than 17,000 square feet of new space will be added to the existing building, with highlights including:
-
A four-classroom kindergarten addition on the northeast side
-
A new accessible entrance and elevator for full building access
-
A three-room childcare centre and an EarlyON room
-
Comprehensive renovations and upgrades to the current school structure
“West Elgin Public School marks a new chapter—not just in name, but in purpose,” added Regan Vankerrebroeck, Superintendent of Education. “The name honours its geographical setting, evokes local pride, and symbolizes a unified educational community.”
The transition brings students, families, and staff from both former schools under one roof—one that reflects the shared values, goals, and history of the broader community.
With the new name in place and the modernization project underway, West Elgin Public School is set to become a beacon for inclusive, future-forward education in Norfolk County.
