Ontario’s government has passed Bill 5, granting itself the power to override provincial and municipal laws for projects deemed economically significant, particularly in the mining sector.
The legislation has ignited protests from First Nations communities, who argue that it infringes on their rights and lacks proper consultation.
During the bill’s passage, Indigenous leaders expressed their dissent, with chants of “Kill Bill 5” echoing in the legislature.
Norfolk County Councillor Kim Huffman announced plans to request the province to repeal the bill, citing concerns over the removal of oversight for development projects.
Haldimand-Norfolk MPP Bobbi Ann Brady also strongly opposed the legislation.
