After the recent documentary Netting the Waters was a raging success, local filmmaker Daryl Granger has already begun production on exciting new projects.
This time, he’s turning away from the water and onto dry land, diving into the behind-the-scenes world of one of the most fascinating travelling attractions — the World’s Finest Shows. Granger shares how his fascination with travelling carnivals inspired the concept for his upcoming documentary.
Daryl believes the reason Netting the Waters resonated so well with audiences is because he fully immerses himself in the world he’s documenting.
For this new project, he’s been granted full-time, unrestricted access to the fairgrounds, thanks to a partnership with long-time showmen Patrick and Stacey Jamison of the World’s Finest Shows.
This creative freedom, Granger says, has allowed him to capture the magic and reality of the travelling fair industry like never before.
So far, production has covered two fairs, during which Daryl has already learned a great deal about what really goes on behind the scenes — insights most people never see.
He noted that safety and technology play a crucial role in putting the show together, yet they are often overlooked by the public.
In fact, the rigorous log-keeping, daily safety inspections, and the high mobility of the equipment often make travelling fair rides even safer than those found in permanent amusement parks.
As Granger points out, safety and technology are essentially the brains behind the fun.
Being able to dive into the world of travelling fairs headfirst has allowed Daryl to meet and connect with the people who work tirelessly behind the scenes.
He’s not just filming — he’s working alongside them, getting to know their stories and daily lives.
Granger admits that, like many, he once held certain stereotypes about carnies and show workers, but now sees that these individuals are far from the clichés.
They are skilled professionals and passionate individuals dedicated to bringing joy to communities.
As his projects develop, audiences can expect more insightful, engaging, and authentically Canadian content from this passionate Norfolk filmmaker.
