Today, Canada is marking Young Caregivers Day, a national effort to recognize and support children, teens, and young adults who care for loved ones. Hosted by the Young Caregivers Association (YCA), the day aims to raise awareness for youth ages 5 to 25 who take on caregiving roles often overlooked by professionals.
Young caregivers help family members living with chronic illness, disabilities, mental health challenges, or addiction. Their responsibilities can include managing medication, assisting with daily tasks, or supporting younger siblings—all while balancing school and personal life.
Despite their critical role, young caregivers remain a “hidden population,” frequently unrecognized by healthcare workers, educators, and social service providers. Many struggle to self-identify and access the support they need.
Through social media campaigns, interviews, and community outreach, YCA is encouraging professionals to ask the right questions and offer the right support. The organization offers a variety of clinical and recreational programs, including one-on-one counselling, life skills training, and summer camps.
Young Caregivers Day is a step toward a future where no young caregiver feels invisible.
