Due to the success of a recently launched program that helps people start careers in the skilled trades, the Skills2Advance Try a Trade program will continue through 2025.
The program is now accepting 36 participants who will receive hands-on training and real-world work experience to prepare for high-demand skilled trades jobs.
A partnership between Six Nations Polytechnic, the CWB Welding Foundation, and the Brant Skills Centre, the program is led by the Workforce Planning Board of Grand Erie.
Participants complete eight weeks of in-class learning, followed by eight weeks in a paid work placement, ensuring they gain valuable on-the-job experience.
“This program addresses our shared goal of growing the skilled trades and ensures our workforce is ready to meet future demands,” said David Piccini, Ontario Minister of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development.
Training areas include welding, metal fabrication, CNC machining, CAD, 3D printing, and robotics. Participants also receive instruction in forklift operation, workplace health and safety, and essential soft skills.
The program is open to individuals with no prior experience in the trades. Priority is given to youth, women, Indigenous people, newcomers, and other underrepresented groups in the Grand Erie region.
In 2024, 80% of program graduates found employment upon completion, while others chose to continue their skilled trades education.
Classes are held at Six Nations Polytechnic’s Brantford campus. Upcoming sessions run from August 25 to October 17 and October 27 to December 19.
