As Safe Boating Awareness Week kicks off, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is reminding paddlers and boaters to prioritize safety after new data revealed that paddlers accounted for almost half of all boating deaths in the past five years.
From 2020 to 2024, 56 of the 131 boating deaths on OPP-patrolled waterways involved paddlers—34 canoeists, 17 kayakers, and five on stand-up paddleboards. The leading causes of these fatalities were capsized vessels and falling overboard.
The OPP stresses the importance of wearing a properly fitted lifejacket, which can save lives even if a person is unconscious. It’s especially critical for those who cannot swim.
Officers also warn that alcohol and drug use, hazardous water conditions, and inexperience contribute to many marine deaths. This week (May 17-23), OPP marine units will be on the water promoting safe practices and enforcing boating laws.
Boaters are encouraged to plan ahead, ensure equipment is functional, check weather conditions, and stay sober. Most importantly, wear your lifejacket—it only works if you wear it.
