As families prepare to celebrate the Victoria Day long weekend with backyard barbecues and fireworks, Norfolk County is urging residents to follow the local Fireworks By-Law and take precautions to ensure a safe celebration.
When Can You Set Off Fireworks in Norfolk County?
Under Norfolk’s Fireworks By-Law, fireworks are only permitted two days before and one day after certain holidays. These include:
-
Victoria Day
-
Canada Day
-
New Year’s Eve
-
U.S. Independence Day
-
Civic Holiday
-
Labour Day
This means fireworks for the Victoria Day holiday are allowed from May 17 to May 20.
Additionally:
-
Fireworks must not be discharged after 11 p.m.
-
Fireworks are prohibited on municipal property, including parks and roads
-
You must own the property where fireworks are set off or have explicit permission from the property owner
Violations of these rules can result in fines or enforcement action.
Safety First: Fireworks Tips for a Worry-Free Holiday
If you’re planning a home display, Norfolk County Fire Services recommends following these firework safety tips:
-
Only adults should handle and ignite fireworks
-
Have a bucket of water or garden hose ready at all times
-
Choose a clear, open space far from trees, homes, vehicles, or dry grass
-
Make sure your property has enough space for safe setup and discharge
-
Never attempt to relight malfunctioning fireworks
If your yard is too small or not ideal for fireworks, consider attending a public display hosted by a local group or municipality.
