Haldimand-Norfolk MPP Bobbi Ann Brady is taking action to protect Ontario’s disappearing farmland.
This week at Queen’s Park, Brady introduced The Protect Our Food Act, 2025, alongside Green Party of Ontario Leader Mike Schreiner.
The bill calls for a new “Foodbelt” strategy to preserve the province’s remaining farmland and prevent reckless overdevelopment.
For Brady, the impact on farms hits close to home.
Ontario is currently losing hundreds acres of farmland every day-a trend that Brady says puts our food security, economy, and rural identity at serious risk.
The proposed legislation would:
Establish a Food and Farmland Strategy Task Force made up of farmers, land use experts, and planners
Develop a Foodbelt Plan to preserve productive farmland across Ontario
Ensure land-use decisions prioritize agricultural needs and long-term sustainability
Brady’s bill has earned early support from major agricultural organizations, including the Ontario Federation of Agriculture, the National Farmers Union – Ontario, and the Ontario Farmland Trust.
The MPP for Haldimand-Norfolk says this isn’t just a rural issue—it’s an economic one.
Agriculture contributes $50 billion to Ontario’s economy and supports nearly one million jobs.
