Waterford is blooming with pride this year as the Waterford and District Horticultural Society teams up with the Waterford Chamber of Commerce to launch a new beautification campaign: the Red and White Summer.
The initiative invites local businesses and residents to decorate their properties with red and white flowers—celebrating Canadian spirit, community pride, and the town’s vibrant downtown. The idea began with a conversation between volunteers from both organizations, quickly growing into a shared vision for a more beautiful Waterford.
“We just want to make Waterford feel bright, welcoming, and united this summer,” said Trudy McMillan of the Horticultural Society. McMillan went on to say community enthusiasm has already been strong.
The campaign encourages storefronts to use red and white planters, Canadian flags, or other decorations. A suggested plant list includes geraniums, petunias, dahlias, and more. Local nurseries have been notified and are helping to supply appropriate plants.
Lara Rockefeller of the Waterford Chamber emphasized that this project is part of a larger beautification push.
She added that this is the beginning of what the Chamber hopes will be a multi-year initiative.
The Horticultural Society is planting at major entrances, and a consumer education piece promotes native red and white plants for home gardens. McMillan and Rockefeller encourage residents across Norfolk to join in.
The effort officially kicks off on the May 24 long weekend, with plantings to last through summer.
The Horticultural Society is also hosting a plant sale this Friday (May 16), from 8 a.m. to noon at the Foodland parking lot. The sale is open to the public, but if you pickup a memberships for just $10 you’ll get discounts at local nurseries too.
