Cast and crew of Murder Birds
Delhi District Secondary School’s drama club is bringing a thrilling new play to the stage this spring—and it’s written entirely by the club themselves.
Titled Murder Birds, the production marks the club’s first full-length play, and their first time performing an original script. Drama teacher and club supervisor Jenna Thompson said the idea to write their own story came from a desire to reduce licensing costs. The savings were then used to enhance props, costumes, and staging.
Set in the 1940s, the murder mystery follows two travelling detectives, Julie and Roger, as they investigate the death of young Bonnie King. Along the way, they discover a tangled plot involving hired assassins—and Julie learns she may be more connected to the case than she realized.
“All good mysteries need interesting characters,” said Victoria Prince, who plays Mr. King. She noted that every character has their own motives.
Adelia Mirie, who plays the antagonist, shared insight into her complex role.
The show features a young cast and crew, including many Grade 9 students, and—for the first time—live music instead of a recorded track. For Savannah Starks, it’s a bittersweet performance. As a graduating student, Murder Birds will be her final show. Starks said it’s the people she’ll miss the most.
Thompson and the club expressed their gratitude to the faculty and staff of Delhi District Secondary School for their ongoing support in helping bring this ambitious production to life.
You can try and solve the mystery of Murder Birds at Delhi District Secondary School on Friday at 7:00 p.m., and on Saturday with performances at 1:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. Doors open 30 minutes before each show.
