Students and families from across Norfolk County gathered at Waterford District High School yesterday (Wednesday, May 7th), for a career fair that offered a closer look at future opportunities in trades, post-secondary education, and local employment.
Organized by Guidance Counselor Lauren Nielsen, the event connected attendees with representatives from colleges, universities, local businesses, and four skilled trades unions. The goal was to help students understand career pathways and learn how to take the next step after high school—whether through apprenticeships, co-op placements, or further education.
She added that there is a major push—driven by government initiatives—to promote skilled trades. Many licensed tradespeople are nearing retirement or have already retired. However, the path to an apprenticeship is very different from traditional education routes.
Nielsen added the fair featured hands-on experiences with equipment brought in by employers like Stubby’s and Norfolk Tractor.
Although hosted at Waterford District High School, the event was open to all area students. Students and parents attended from Simcoe, Delhi, Port Dover, and beyond. Several Grade 8 students also joined with their families to begin exploring future career interests.
The career fair not only helped students imagine their futures but also gave them the tools to begin planning it. For many, it was the first step toward a brighter path.
