As the weather warms and people begin their spring cleaning, a Fanshawe College professor is reminding Canadians to think twice about how they handle household chemicals.
Kate Graham, a new professor in the School of Public Safety, teaches Environmental Protection and Sustainability in Fanshawe’s Occupational Health and Safety Management program. With over 10 years of experience in health, safety, and environmental work, Graham says many people forget that home products can pose serious risks.
She said products like oven cleaner, bleach, pesticides, and even old paint can become dangerous if stored or disposed of incorrectly. Graham points out that storage areas like garages and sheds often reach extreme temperatures in summer months, which can affect chemical safety.
With spring cleaning in the air, it’s the perfect time to open up all those nooks and crannies and see what you’ve been storing under the sink and in the garage. While cleaning your home, take the time to properly dispose of products you’re no longer using. Graham adds that it’s never been easier to get rid of unwanted items.
She also warns against “wish-cycling”—putting items in the recycling bin and hoping they’ll be sorted properly.
She encourages people to keep products in their original containers and to always check labels for safety instructions. In an emergency, poison control numbers are usually listed on the packaging.
Graham recommends you look at the full life cycle of products, and only buy what you need. In some cases upcycling is also an option.
Making smart choices about your purchases helps protect you, your family, and the environment. To assist with proper disposal, Graham recommends using apps like Recycle Coach.
Many communities, including Norfolk, host hazardous waste drop-off days in the spring. The next event is scheduled for May 24 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 340 Argyle Avenue in Delhi. Residents can book online at norfolkcounty.ca/HHW or contact ServiceNorfolk at 519-426-5870 or 226-NORFOLK, ext. 0.
With warmer weather arriving, now is the perfect time to clean out cupboards, sheds, and garages—safely.
