The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) West Region is highlighting a significant number of seatbelt-related charges laid during its Easter long weekend traffic safety campaign.
Between April 18 and April 21, 2025, a total of 338 charges were issued across 13 detachments in the West Region.
According to OPP data, the failure to wear a seatbelt was a contributing factor in 60 fatalities on OPP-patrolled roads across Ontario in 2024. Of those, 26 deaths occurred in the West Region alone.
Notably, Norfolk County recorded 11 seatbelt violations during the campaign—one of the highest tallies in the region. Nearby counties had significantly fewer infractions: Haldimand reported one, Oxford had three, and Brant reported seven.
The OPP continues to stress the importance of wearing seatbelts to reduce fatalities and serious injuries in motor vehicle collisions. Seatbelt compliance remains a top priority for officers during traffic enforcement campaigns.
