The Long Point Region Conservation Authority (LPRCA) has issued a Flood Watch for its entire watershed area due to incoming rain and rising temperatures.
A series of low-pressure systems will bring 20 to 30 mm of rainfall on Tuesday and Wednesday, combined with above-freezing temperatures. The snowpack, already at its water-holding capacity, will continue melting, increasing runoff. Frozen ground conditions may cause water to overwhelm streams and rivers, leading to localized flooding in low-lying areas.
Although river ice has weakened, Lake Erie remains ice-covered, creating a risk of ice jams where rivers meet the lake. Residents are urged to stay away from waterways, as fast-moving, icy water can be dangerous. Landowners should check culverts and drainage systems if it is safe to do so.
This Flood Watch remains in effect until 4:30 pm on Friday, March 7th. LPRCA will monitor conditions and provide updates as needed.
