The Norfolk Association for Community Living (NACL) has named its board room the “Valerie Smit Room” to honour Valerie’s 40 years of dedicated service.
Valerie joined NACL in 1984 as a Support Worker, inspired by her mother, Hyacinth, who also worked at NACL. Over four decades, she has supported people with developmental disabilities, mentored staff, and fostered key community partnerships. Her efforts have greatly advanced NACL’s mission of inclusion and support.
Executive Director Stella Barker called Valerie the “heart and soul” of NACL, praising her tireless leadership and commitment. Valerie is the second employee to reach the 40-year milestone, following Barb Bint in 2021.
NACL, founded in 1953, continues to promote inclusion for people with disabilities in Norfolk County. The board room dedication reflects on its past achievements while looking ahead to a future of growth and progress.
