Tonight Delhi District Secondary School is hosting Friday Night Lights. It’s a varsity football game played after school hours under the lights and it is guaranteed to be a good time. The community has really got behind the event with a long list of sponsors such as Couwenberg Concrete, CDN Buildings, Timmerman’s Ranch, The Delhi German Home and the Friends of Delhi Athletics to name a few.
The Friday Night Lights game is being revived after a bit of a hiatus due to COVID. However, the excitement from the players about this traditional game is obvious. Defensive tackle Ethan Binkly is happy to see the game return for his senior year.
Carson McKie the team’s Centre and centre for Team Ontario has fond memories of previous games under the lights.
In tonight’s game the Delhi Raiders will face the Waterford Wolves. The Raiders are currently 2-0 this season, with wins against the Pauline Johnson and McKinnon Park. While the Wolves come in at 1-1 after beating Holy Trinity in their season opener and then losing a close one to Simcoe Composite last week.
Training camp went well for the Raiders in pre-season. Quarterback, JD Zurby told us that training for many of the players started long before practices began.
Offensive Tackle, Seth Chaulk was also positive about the team noting they have been building over the past years and gaining experience and talent.
Offensive Coordinator, Leroy Foster Jr. says hard work pays off and at Delhi they are building a football atmosphere that emphasizes teamwork.
Principal Jim Merrick really supports this type of event. He also appreciates all the hard work that goes into making an event like this, hoping the community can come together.
There is so much going on at the game tonight: pregame presentations, halftime performances, food vendors and fundraisers. Come on out Norfolk and join in the fun!
