The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) in West Region issued over 750 charges during the “Drive Smart – Keep it Safe” traffic safety campaign, which ran from September 23 to 29, across southwestern Ontario.
During the initiative, officers stopped 1,967 vehicles, with 26 drivers charged with stunt driving. Stunt driving penalties include an immediate 30-day licence suspension, a 14-day vehicle impoundment, and fines ranging from $2,000 to $10,000. Repeat offenders could face longer licence suspensions or even lifetime bans.
In addition, 86 drivers of modified vehicles were charged, along with 597 drivers for speeding and 76 individuals for Criminal Code traffic violations.
Inspector Mike McConnell emphasized the importance of safe driving, stating, “We’ve reinforced the fact that safe driving is a responsibility we all share. Let’s continue to say no to speeding, stunt driving, and unsafe vehicle modifications.”
The OPP’s campaign aimed to make roads safer by encouraging responsible driving.
