The Brant County Health Unit (BCHU) has confirmed the first-ever case of rabies in a Brantford-Brant resident. The individual, believed to have been exposed to the virus by a bat in the Timiskaming region, is currently hospitalized.
Rabies is a serious viral infection that affects the brain and spinal cord. It is transmitted to humans through the saliva or mucous of infected animals, often through bites or scratches. Common carriers in Canada include bats, skunks, foxes, and raccoons. Human rabies cases are rare, with only 26 reported in Canada since 1924.
Family members and close contacts are being assessed and may receive post-exposure treatment.
The BCHU advises keeping pets vaccinated, avoiding contact with unfamiliar animals, and seeking medical attention immediately after any potential rabies exposure. For more information on rabies prevention, visit bchu.org/rabies.
