Ontario Education Minister Todd Smith is resigning from his seat and cabinet immediately to pursue a new opportunity in the private sector. Smith, who joined Premier Doug Ford’s cabinet in 2018, served the longest in the energy portfolio. He steps down less than three months after taking on the education role, which he received in a cabinet shuffle in June.
Premier Doug Ford praised Smith for his achievements, especially his work in reforming Ontario’s energy policies and lowering electricity prices. Despite these successes, sources suggest Smith was unhappy with his shift from energy to education.
In a statement, Smith called his decision to resign difficult and expressed deep gratitude to his family for their support over his 13 years in the legislature.
