On Wednesday evening, July 31st, Haldimand County learned that an event organized by Diagolon, a suspected alt-right extremist group, was taking place in Jarvis at a county-owned hall managed by community volunteers.
The booking was made under a personal name, misrepresenting the event’s nature. The Lions were led to believe it was a family and friend get-together. Both the County and the Jarvis Lions Community Centre regret this oversight and would not have permitted the rental had the group’s affiliation been disclosed.
“Haldimand County does not condone hate or racism,” stated Mayor Shelley Ann Bentley, emphasizing the community’s commitment to inclusion, equity, and diversity, and assuring that groups allegedly promoting violence and racism are not welcome.
