Pottahawk Sunday is this weekend.
It’s a place where people hit the water to party, and Constable Andrew Gamble notes, it’s quiet popular.
Gamble wants that trend to continue, but they’ll be there just in case.
That was Constable Andrew Gamble.
Pottahawk is associated with people having a party on the water, but Gamble wants to remind those bringing the boats out – you have a responsibility.
One common trend with Pottahawk, that police see every year, is being being stranded.
Police will also be on the roads, making sure people don’t return to shore and get behind the wheel while intoxicated.
They have provided a list of safety tips below:
-Always wear a life jacket or PFD while boating. It’s too late to put one on after you’ve fallen in.
Do not operate a boat while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. It’s against the law and carries the same penalties as driving a vehicle.
-Conduct a pre-departure checklist for all required safety equipment. Safety equipment is required by law and may save your life.
-Check the weather forecast before leaving the dock. Weather can turn enjoyment into tragedy.
-Let someone know your destination and when you plan to return. Avoid picking up hitchhikers; a ride there does not guarantee a ride home. Let’s ensure everyone returns safely.
-Have access to some type of communication (VHF radio, cell phone with charger) throughout the day. You may need to call for help.
-Always carry your Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC) with you.
-Plan ahead. Ensure someone on board will be sober and has a valid PCOC if driving the boat back to shore.
To report an impaired boater or an emergency, dial 9-1-1 on your cell phone or use channel 16 on your VHF radio.
