Canadian negotiators are at a downtown Ottawa convention centre today with representatives from 174 other countries trying to hammer out a treaty that will outline how to eliminate plastic waste across the world.
The treaty is sometimes referred to as the Paris agreement for plastics and aims to eliminate plastic waste by 2040.
The negotiators are trying to to agree on how to limit the most common types of plastic waste found in nature and address the most toxic chemicals used to make plastic.
New data from Statistics Canada suggests that from 2012 to 2020, the equivalent of more 15 billion plastic bottles and as many as 14 billion plastic grocery bags were littered in Canada.
