April is Oral Health Month in Canada and the Oral Health Team at Huron Perth Public Health (HPPH) is using this month to talk about “friendly” dental visits. These visits are free and available at HPPH dental clinics for children who are three years old and younger.
We spoke with Registered Dental Hygienist Anna Read who says while April is Oral Health Month in Canada, this is something the health units advocate year round.
While most people have a family dentist, most do not treat children under three years of age, which is why Read suggests reaching out to health units to see if they can be looked at.
Dental screening are done by appointment only with the Haldimand-Norfolk Health Unit.
Families who meet income requirements can also get help enrolling their child in Healthy Smiles Ontario (HSO).
This program offers free dental services for children and youth under 17 from low-income households.
Oral health is important because baby teeth are necessary for eating, smiling, talking, and making space for adult teeth. Starting good oral health habits early can keep a child’s smile healthy for life.
