Negotiators from more than 170 countries will be in downtown Ottawa today to discuss a global treaty to end plastic waste.
The treaty is sometimes referred to as the Paris agreement for plastics and aims to eliminate plastic waste by 2040.
The representatives will try to agree on how to limit the most common types of plastic waste found in nature and address the most toxic chemicals used to make plastic.
Ahead of the meeting, Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault announced Canada is planning on forcing companies that manufacture the material to report how much plastic they have produced annually to a national registry.
