Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says a majority of Canada’s premiers, including Ontario Premier Doug Ford, would rather complain about the federal carbon pricing program than propose viable alternatives for reducing emissions.
Trudeau made the comment after Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Andrew Furey’s called for an “emergency meeting of leaders” to discuss the carbon levy.
Furey is the lone Liberal premier in the country and he has joined his counterparts in Ontario, Alberta and Saskatchewan in pushing Trudeau to abandon the planned 15-dollar-per-tonne increase, which went into effect yesterday.
Trudeau says the increase will also mean larger quarterly rebate cheques that help offset the higher cost of fuel.
