Former prime minister Brian Mulroney is being remembered by peers and contemporaries of all political stripes as a “giant” and a “visionary,” as the country absorbs news of the Conservative icon’s death early last evening at the age of 84.
Liberal Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said he was devastated to learn of the death of a man he called an “extraordinary statesman.”
Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre thanked Mulroney for his “candid advice and generous mentorship.”
And N-D-P Leader Jagmeet Singh praised Mulroney’s contributions to the environment, including “leading the world in tackling acid rain.”
Mulroney led the country from 1984 until ’93, during which he ushered in a free-trade deal with the U-S and brought in the G-S-T.
